The purpose of the ILST course is to teach Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Scouts in leadership positions within their troop understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. ILST is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Scouts and is a replacement for Troop Leadership Training. ILST is required before you can take NYLT.

ILST is for current and future youth leaders in your troop. If your troop is interested in this training, please email Bonnie Shoemaker at cckid5@pa.metrocast.net to schedule a course or provide training materials.

While most training courses only need to be taken once, the following courses have expiration dates and need to be renewed:

• S.A.F.E. Guarding Youth (SYT) — every 1 year
• Hazardous Weather — every 2 years – Required for direct contact leaders to take youth on outdoor activities
• Safe Swim Defense — every 2 years – Required by at least 1 leader to take youth swimming
• Paddle Craft Safety — every 3 years – Required by at least 1 leader to take youth in paddle craft (canoe, kayak, paddleboard, etc.)
• Safety Afloat — every 2 years – Required by at least 1 least leader to take youth on floating activities (whitewater rafting, tubing, etc.)
• Climb On Safely — every 2 years – Required by at least 1 leader to take youth on climbing and repelling activities (outdoor and indoor artificial walls and natural rocks)
• Trek Safely — every 2 years – Required by at least 1 leader to take youth on backcountry hiking trip
• Range Safety — every 2 years – Required by at leader 1 leader to take youth on Range and Target activities
• Range Master Training — every 2 years – Required to run the BB Gun Range for Cub Scouts and/or Archery Range for Cub Scouts/Scouts BSA at Camp Lavigne
• Chainsaw Safety — every 2 years – Required to run a chainsaw at Camp.

If your unit goes on an activity and does not have the appropriate trained supervision and an incident occurs, your unit will not be covered under Scouting America insurance.

New adults joining Scouting must take the full SYT course, about 90 minutes. SYT is valid for 1 year. When it is time to take it again, you can take the SYT Refresher course, about 20 minutes.

— If you have not taken the full 90 minute course, you must take that before you can take the refresher to get full SYT credit.

— If your SYT is expired for 30 days or more, you must take the full 90 minute course again.

— If you fail the course quiz on the refresher course with less than 80% on your first attempt, you will be directed back to the full 90 minute course.
